Owners Lynne and
Bill Reed
Lynne and Bill Reed are the owners of Misty Valley
Books. They purchased the Chester landmark from Dwight Currie and
Michael Kohlmann in 2001 and continue the store's nearly two-decade-long
commitment to fine reading, both new and classic.
Longtime Vermonters, the Reeds bring to bookselling
a lifelong delight in the written word and an innovative approach.
They have made of Misty Valley Books a magnet in southern Vermont
for people interested in reading and writers, hosting numerous author
events - including the prestigious Vermont Voices series in the
fall and nationally-recognized New Voices in January. They continuously
stock the store with unusual titles, as well as old favorites, and
keep current with the latest books.
Lynne,
originally from Virginia, holds a graduate degree in Linguistics
and was for a long time head of the English language program
and marketing director in Europe for the School for International
Training/World Learning in Brattleboro, VT. Bill has been a
teacher of French in Vermont schools for nearly 30 years and
has taught English-as-a-Second-Language in Africa with the Peace
Corps and in France with the Fulbright Program. The Reeds have
traveled, lived and worked together in Europe - Bill in China,
as well - and bring an international perspective to Misty Valley
Books.

But their principal interest is in providing the greater Chester
area with a source for intellectual, entertaining and practical
reading material - the latest fiction and magazines, as well
as books on making stone walls, making pies and making sense
of the world. They have made of the children's and young adults'
section a lively and inviting place.
Lynne and Bill try to read as many of the
books they sell as possible and love to talk about what they've
read. They are especially delighted to hear from customers
about their favorites.

Following the New Voices event
in 2002, Vermont Life editor Tom Slayton said in a commentary
on Vermont Public Radio: "In opening the New Voices readings,
bookstore owner Lynne Reed had declared, 'I see evidence every
day that reading is still alive in our area, and as long as
we're reading and thinking, we're okay.' She's right, of course.
Reading and thinking are two touchstones of a healthy interior
life, and the New Voices readings in Chester are certainly
evidence that the life of the mind is alive and well in Vermont."
